Nick Anstis Internship Journey

Nick Anstis infront of the crematorium gardens

As part of a sponsored internship programme, we were delighted to welcome Nick Anstis to the Crematorium gardens.

Nick worked with us on Wednesdays and Thursdays, from 9:30am to 3:30pm. During his time here, he gained hands-on experience throughout the seasons, often working independently on tasks such as weeding, hoeing, raking leaves, and mulching - his personal favourite!

Nick found great tranquillity in his work within the gardens. Since joining us, his communication skills and confidence have grown remarkably. Initially quite reserved, Nick now engages comfortably with members of the public when approached.

His resilience and stamina have also flourished. Nick braved all weather conditions with enthusiasm, never deterred by the rain. To ensure his comfort and safety, we provided him with suitable outdoor gear, including boots, a coat, and gloves.

John, our lead gardener, invested significant time in mentoring Nick, which enabled him to work more independently. Nick’s contributions have been highly valued by everyone at the Crematorium.

In addition to his work in the gardens, Nick pursued his passion for history - particularly trains - by spending some time at Barnstaple and North Devon Museum. Having completed his course at Petroc, we are pleased to keep the door open for Nick to return as a volunteer if he wishes while he continues to explore his interests within the community.

Overall, our first experience with a supported internship has been an outstanding success and John is eager to welcome another supported intern to the Crematorium gardens.
