Proposals to introduce a minimum set of standards for houses in multiple occupation (HMOs) are being put forward by North Devon Council.

HMOs are shared homes, including house and flat shares, student homes, bedsits and some buildings converted into flats.

A public consultation is taking place until Sunday 6 June. Tenants, landlords, licence holders and managers of HMOs are all invited to have their say on the proposed minimum standards which include:

  • heating
  • bathroom facilities
  • food storage and preparation
  • bedroom sizes
  • energy efficiency
  • drinking water
  • radon levels
  • management and tenant duties

Head of Environmental Health and Housing, Jeremy Mann, says: "Licensing has helped improve the quality and safety of homes for people living in the private rented sector. The new standards will make sure we continue to make homes in North Devon safe, warm and secure for tenants and help the council continue to tackle rogue landlords who own or rent an HMO without meeting these minimum regulations."
