Yeo Valley Community Woodland in Barnstaple has been awarded a prestigious five-star rating at the South West in Bloom “Pride in Parks” awards. The ceremony, held at Rosemoor Gardens on Thursday 27 March 2025, recognised the woodland for its exceptional community involvement, biodiversity efforts, and contribution to climate resilience.
The award was given in recognition of several key achievements:
- Community-led planting – The woodland’s development has been driven by community involvement, with local schoolchildren, volunteers, and residents playing an active role in planning and planting the new woodland. Over the past few years, 900 schoolchildren and more than 300 volunteers have assisted park staff and contractors in tree planting efforts.
- Active volunteer group – The Friends of Yeo Valley Community Woodland meet monthly, carrying out vital conservation and maintenance work.
- Biodiversity and climate impact – The woodland is set to absorb 3,500 tonnes of CO₂ over the next 100 years, making it a valuable natural asset in tackling climate change while providing a haven for local wildlife.
- Well-maintained green space – The site was praised for being clean and tidy, with clear interpretation signs at each entrance to help visitors learn more about the woodland.
Andrew Moulton, Parks Manager at North Devon Council, said: "This award is a testament to the dedication and hard work of the entire community. From the early planning stages to ongoing maintenance, so many people have contributed to making Yeo Valley Community Woodland a thriving, biodiverse space. We are really pleased to see these efforts recognised and look forward to seeing the woodland continue to flourish for generations to come."
