North Devon Council has a new leader and deputy leader as members met for the first time since the general election.

Councillor David Clayton was selected as the new leader of the council at a full council meeting on Wednesday, 17 July.

Councillor Clayton takes over from Councillor Ian Roome, who has stood down from the post after being elected as the Member of Parliament for North Devon earlier this month.

The council also elected Councillor Peter Leaver to be the new deputy leader.

Both will stay in the posts until the next annual council meeting, which will be held on 30 April 2025.

Councillor Clayton said: "It is an honour and a privilege to be elected as the new leader of North Devon Council.  I would like to thank Councillor Roome for his work as leader of the council and wish him all the best as North Devon's Member of Parliament. I hope we can continue to work together for our residents and communities.

"We want North Devon to be a sustainable, inclusive community that fosters prosperity and wellbeing for all. We will continue to work hard to address housing needs, protect the environment, bring economic growth and achieve financial security as a council."
