Expressions of interest are being invited by the Bridge Trust via North Devon Council's procurement portal for the refurbishment of the listed Bridge Chambers in Barnstaple, in a partnership project that is a major part of the Flourishing Barnstaple programme.
The aim of the refurbishment is to create a performance space for cultural and arts events and add a terrace to the side of the building, ultimately creating an accessible performing arts, learning, creation and performance venue.
The works are part of a wider project funded by the Cultural Development Fund (CDF) to improve people’s access to arts, support local economic growth through culture and safeguard vital local collections for future generations. In March 2023, the council secured a £3 million share of the national pot of £58.8 million for investment into two of Barnstaple's historic buildings to support a programme of training and activities that inspire culture and creativity.
Lead Member for Economic Development and Regeneration at North Devon Council, Councillor Malcolm Prowse says: "Bridge Chambers is a hidden gem, so we and The Bridge Trust are extremely excited to bring the building into community use through our refurbishment plans.
"Culture can bring enormous benefits and improvements to a place and the people who spend time in it. This tender process brings us one step closer to transforming Bridge Chambers into a cultural space for residents of and visitors to Barnstaple, and is an eagerly awaited milestone."
Chair of the Bridge Trust, Gemma Williams said: "This is a really exciting opportunity to contribute towards transforming Bridge Chambers into a cultural hub for Barnstaple, and ensuring that the history of this beautiful building can be maintained for many years to come"
Expressions of interest can be made on the council's procurement portal.
