Why weekly food waste collections were introduced
Since 5 June 2017 we have been emptying your food waste from kerbside caddies along with your weekly recycling collections. You can no longer put food waste in your green or black wheelie bin/black bags.
Even homes with no wheelie bin collections are now receiving a weekly food waste collection.
The reasons for introducing weekly food waste recycling collections are to meet customer demand and expectations for an improved recycling service, whilst also supporting other changes to our waste and recycling service. This included the introduction of our chargeable green garden waste collection service, as well as trialing plans for three weekly black bin collections.
Together, changes to our waste and recycling service will help us towards meeting three specific aims:
- to increase the amount and type of recyclable materials that we can collect every single week
- to meet national recycling targets - 50% of all household waste to be recycled by 2020 (we currently recycle 44%)
- to reduce the cost of the overall service - we need to meet our financial savings target of at least £340,000 due to severe government funding cuts
