What is the Annual Electoral Canvass?

North Devon’s Electoral Registration Officer must undertake a canvass of all households in the district each year to check voter details are correct. This year the electoral canvass is changing.

We will be contacting all residential properties in North Devon from mid-July.

Changes to the electoral canvass

New canvassing rules allow us to check voter details against other government records. This means some households will not need to respond to the canvass notification.

You must respond if:

  • Any information is incorrect on the form, or there are people eligible to register to vote at your address who are not included on the form
  • The notification you receive states that you must respond

How will you contact me?

We will contact residential properties in North Devon mid-July 2020 by email, text message or by sending paper forms using Royal Mail.

If you do not respond we may need to contact you to confirm voter details.

How do I respond?

If there are no changes at your address and you have been asked to respond, the quickest and easiest way to confirm existing details are correct is online at household response. You will need to enter the two-part security code printed on the form.

You can also confirm existing voter details are correct for your address by:

  • SMS - text NOCHANGE followed by both parts of the security code to 80212 (standard charges apply)
  • Telephone - please call 0800 197 9871
  • Complete the paper form and post to us

If you need to inform us of changes to voter details at your address, the quickest and easiest way to respond is to go online to household response.

You can also tell us about changes to voter details at your address by completing the paper form and posting it to us.

If we have asked you to respond, please help us save time and Council funds by providing the requested information as quickly as possible.

Registering a new elector

The canvass form sent to your address is not a registration form.

Anyone at your address who is eligible to vote and is added in your reply to the canvass form will not become a voter until they apply to register themselves online here.

Applications take around 5 minutes to complete and applicants' will need to supply their National Insurance number and date of birth.

If no registration is received from new eligible individuals at your address we contact them by email or post.

We ask that the person applies as soon as possible so that we do not have to contact them to complete the registration process.

Opting out of the open register

You can opt out from appearing on the open register at any time by contacting us.
